[greenlifestyle] Fwd: Hasil Tes Menunjukkan Rambut Para Delegasi Mengandung Merkuri

Rekans,

salam merah kuning hijau,

Subject: Tes Rambut Delegasi INC1 Perjanjian Global Merkuri: Penduduk Negara Berkembang Mengandung Merkuri 2x Lebih Banyak daripada Penduduk Negara Maju
To: i

Dear all,

Apologise for cross postings.

I am currently at the negotiations for a mercury treaty held in Stockholm. I am participating in this negotiation meeting on behalf of Indonesia Toxics-Free Network and participating members of IPEN (International POPs Elimination Network). There are wide range of issues related to mercury being discussed in this INC1 (Intergovernmental Negotiation Committee) meeting. A global treaty on mercury is scheduled to be sign in 2013. Issues on supply and demand of mercury, mercury in products and processes, wastes containing mercury, mercury and artisanal & small-scale gold mining are some of the topics negotiated within the treaty.

IPEN and the Swedish Society for Nature Conservation (SSNC) during the negotiation conducted hair test for 58 participants, representing government delegations and NGOs from 40 countries, have just released a report on sampling of hair for mercury and thought you might find it both interesting and relevant.

In summary, the same people who are negotiating a global treaty on mercury all had mercury in their hair..... even the Swedish Environment Minister...!

- Mercury levels in human hair ranged from 93 ug/kg to 2956 ug/kg.

- 38% of the samples exceeded the US National Research Council mercury reference dose of 1000 ug/kg; (level for pregnant women to avoid adverse fetal brain development effects)

- Of the samples that exceeded the reference dose; 81% were from developing and transition countries

To test the hypothesis that delegates might differ in their human body burden of mercury, the data was separated into two groups; participants from developed countries and those from developing countries and CEIT (Countries with Economies In Transitions) (Table1). Interestingly, a statistical analysis of the data shows that average mercury levels in hair of participants from developing countries and CEIT was approximately twice as high as levels found in participants from developed countries; 669 ug/kg and 1182 ug/kg

Those tested included:
45 government delegates and 8 representatives of NGOs and Indigenous Peoples. In addition, 4 Swedish members of Swedish parliamentary parties, Andreas Carlgren (Minister of Environment, the Center Party), Göran Hägglund (Social Minister Party Leader, Christian Democrats), Mona Sahlin (Party Leader, Social Democrats) and Maria Wetterstrand (Party Leader, The Greens), and 1 Swedish Olympic Game Gold Winner, Anja Pärson.

I myself participated in the hair test and found out that mercury in my hair is about 1364 Hg μg/kg, exceeding the
US National Research Council mercury reference dose. I recall my eating habit and my favorite fish, tuna... be it tuna salad, tuna sambal goreng, etc... Tuna, sharks, swordfish, and all the high chain fish have the highest mercury concentration.

One of the participants have very high mercury concentration almost 20,000
Hg μg/kg. One participant was surprise with the result because she was vegetarian and always cautious about her organic food. Rossana Dewi from Gita Pertiwi will be available for you to ask more about the impact on the use of pesticides and fungicides which might contain mercury. You can find her email in the copy of this email (dewiross@yahoo.com). I also cc this email to Ibu Anna Alisjahbana from Yayasan Suryakanti (alisja_a@melsa.net.id) for information on the background of children with special attention.

I am willing to open and publish the result of my hair test for public to raise the awareness of the public, especially for women in child-bearing age and for fish diet advisory. Women in child-bearing age should not eat tuna during their pregnancy.

The Swedish National Food Administration recommends that women who are trying to conceive a baby or who are pregnant or who are breastfeeding should not eat the Swedish fish pike nor perch more than 2 to 3 times a year, due to possible mercury contamination. Such advisory might not be available for Indonesia and we cannot stop people from eating fish. We need to raise public awareness on fish consumption.

I am attaching the report of hair test result and my hair test result so you can share the information to make people aware about their children's dietary.

Please let me know if you need more information about this matter.

I can be reach via email only, will be back to Indonesia only by the 16th of June. On June 17th, I will be in Jakarta. So if some of you interested in meeting me directly, please let me know so I can arrange a meeting for more updates from the negotiation meeting.

"For two thirds of the world's population, including most of the world's poor, fish provides at least 40% of protein consumption (source: Commodities Atlas: Fishery Products, UNCTAD- UN Conference on Trade & Development). So... What if you could only eat fish safely 2 to 3 times a year in your country ?"

Maaf saya pakai bahasa Inggris, just for practicality reasons. Terimakasih.

Salam,
yuyun
