Jakarta, Kompas - Upaya mengurangi emisi gas rumah kaca di atmosfer harus segera dilakukan jika ingin menghindarkan percepatan pemanasan global dan perubahan iklim yang tidak terkendali. Potensi tersebut meningkat karena pelepasan gas rumah kaca dari laut terus bertambah.Staf pengajar Departemen Ilmu dan Teknologi Kelautan IPB, Alan F Koropitan, menjelaskan, air lautan di seluruh dunia berotasi terus-menerus dari perairan utara bumi—antara lain Laut Atlantik—ke perairan selatan bumi, seperti Laut Antartika.[read]

CANCUN, Rabu - Sekretaris Jenderal Perserikatan Bangsa-Bangsa Ban Ki-moon memprihatinkan masih lambatnya negosiasi peningkatan dana dari negara-negara maju untuk mengatasi kondisi darurat bagi negara-negara berkembang yang terdampak akibat perubahan iklim.”Saya memprihatinkan atas usaha kita sejauh ini masih belum memadai. The United States onTuesday launched a new drive to boost exports of renewable energy products with a warning from Commerce Secretary Gary Locke that the United States could lose jobs in that area because Congress has not passed an energy policy."The longer we wait, the more the Chinese, the Germans and others will be moving along," Locke said at the first meeting of a new private sector advisory committee charged with developing an export expansion plan.[read]

Residents of the Himalayas and other mountain areas face a "tough and unpredictable future" as global warming melts glaciers and threatens worse floods and water loss, officials said during U.N. climate talks on Tuesday.A study said that glaciers in southern Chile and Argentina, followed by ones in Alaska, had been losing mass "faster and for longer than glaciers in other parts of the world."[read]
