Group sets out to map Jakarta's biodiversity
Environmentalists are preparing a map of sites of ecological interest in Jakarta to help conserve biodiversity in the city, which they say will be ready by next year.
"We hope that the map will be ready next year. The 'nature map' will highlight locations of interest for watchers of bird, plant, insect and even snake in Jakarta," Ady Kristanto, a birdwatcher from the Jakarta Green Map (PHJ) group, said Saturday during a community visit to Kridaloka Park in Senayan, Central Jakarta.
Ady hoped that by raising awareness about biodiversity to city residents, the group could help conserve the environment in Jakarta.
Kridaloka Park, a hub for birdwatchers and Jakartans wanting to learn about various plant species, was the fourth place visited by the group as part of the mapmaking process.
Every month, the PHJ monitors biodiversity in the city by visiting parks and open spaces. Before visiting Kridaloka, the group visited the National Monument Park in Central Jakarta, Senopati Park and Ragunan Park in South Jakarta.
"We are planning to visit 20 places, mostly city parks," said Ady, the author of Keanekaragaman Hayati Jakarta (Jakarta's Biodiversity). So far, Ady has found 22 bird species at Kridaloka Park, including the finch, large turtledove, woodpecker and starling.
"All are welcome to join us," Ady said, while describing the bird species at Kridaloka Park to 10 participants on Saturday. "With this visit, I hope to introduce people to the city's biodiversity."
A newcomer to the map project, Maria Theresia Rika Erawati, 37, said she was not really interested in nature, but enjoyed the park visits.
"I came here to accompany my 10-year-old son Dika, who is very much interested in nature," she said.
Maria said that she was happy herself being able to learn about species of the plants.
Ady said biodiversity in Jakarta had decreased.
"In 1945, there were about 256 bird species, but according to the survey we conducted between 2004 and 2008, there were only 121 species," he said, adding that most of the birds had died off or migrated as the green belt in the city continued to shrink. (not)

bagi yang belum, ini lah saatnya....jalan2, dapat teman2 baru, sambil belajar ttg keanekaragaman hayati yg ada di taman tsb.
