Celebrate the 2010 Global Day of Action against Waste and Incineration

The Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives / Global Anti-Incinerator Alliance (GAIA) would like to invite all members and allies to join our 9th Global Day of Action against Waste and Incineration, on December 1st, 2010.
This year´s Global Day of Action will focus on calling for the adoption of Zero Waste strategies that create sustainable jobs, protect the climate, communities health and livelihoods.
The upcoming UN Climate Change Conference in Cancun, Mexico (November 29 – December 10) and the 10th anniversary of GAIA's establishment (November 28 – December 1) provide opportunities to spread out our cause, join efforts with other allies fighting false solutions to climate change, and celebrate the strength of the anti-incinerator and Zero Waste movement. "GAIA: Celebrating 10 years of community action for Zero Waste solutions" will be the slogan used to celebrate this year. As usual, participating groups will also have the flexibility to find and use a relevant hook to make their GDA activities responsive to local needs.

Participating groups are provided with the flexibility to organize activities according to their campaign priorities. If December 1 does not work well with you, you definitely have the option of picking another day in November until the first week of December that will suit your local priorities and circumstances.
WHAT TO DO?
The extent of your participation and the amount of time you put into the GDA is totally up to you. Participating groups are provided with the flexibility to organize activities according to their campaign priorities.
We will coordinate a global photo action that will present a good media hook and will reflect the diversity and extension of our movement. You can join this action and use it as part of your local activities. We will send the invitation to participate in this action in the coming weeks.
Here are some ideas on what you can do during the build up and observance of the GDA:
- issue press release or send letter to the editor
- have a 2010 GDA photo taken for the GAIA collage
- appear in TV/talk over the radio on waste concerns particularly on the connection between waste and climate change
- feature ZW management projects in communities
- organize activities with wastepickers groups and other recycler organizations to highlight green jobs
- dialogue with government departments in charge of waste management,
climate and CDM issue - talk to your country delegate/s to the United Nations Conference on Climate
Change – COP 16 in Cancun, Mexico - convene public meetings to raise awareness and promote concerted action
- arrange public debate on waste and climate issues
- organize non-violent direct action
- hold picket, rally and other protest assemblies
- stage creative communication activities like street theater or drama on waste and pollution
- submit petitions to ministries or funding institution
- launch a cyberaction/cyberalert
- organize a recycling/Zero Waste exhibition

La Alianza Global por Alternativas a la Incineración / Alianza Global Anti-Incineración (GAIA) invita a sus miembros y aliados a sumarse al 9no Día de Acción Global contra la Basura y la Incineración, que se celebrará el 1 de diciembre, 2010.
El Día de Acción Global de este año se enfocará en exigir la adopción de estrategies de Basura Cero que generen empleos sustentables, protejan el clima, la salud pública y la fuente de sustento de quienes viven de la recuperación de materiales.
La Conferencia de Naciones Unidas sobre Cambio Climático en Cancún, México (29 de noviembre – 10 de diciembre ) y el 1o aniversario de la creación de GAIA (28 de noviembre – 1 de diciembre) ofrecen oportunidades para hacer oir nuestro mensaje, sumar esfuerzos con otros aliados que luchan contra las falsas soluciones al cambio climático, y celebrar la fuerza del movimiento anti-incineración y a favor de Basura Cero. "GAIA: celebrando 10 años de acción ciudadana por soluciones de Basura Cero" será el mensaje que utilizaremos este año. Como siempre, los participantes tienen la flexibilidad de utilizar los mensajes que prefieran para respaldar mejor sus luchas locales.

Los participantes son libres de realizar las actividades que quieran en base a sus prioridades. Si el 1 de diciembre no es un día propicio para ustedes, pueden escoger otro día en noviembre y hasta la primera semana de diciembre.
¿CÓMO PARTICIPAR?
El grado de participación y la cantidad de tiempo y energía dedicada al DAG queda bajo su elección, y también tienen flexibilidad de realizar la actividad que mejor se adapte a sus prioridades y posibilidades.
El equipo de coordinación de GAIA estará convocando a realizar una demostración fotográfica, que presentará un buen material de prensa para utilizar en sus actividades, y reflejará la diversidad y extensión de nuestro movimiento. En breve les invitaremos a participar de esta demostración.
Aquí hay algunas ideas de actividades que pueden realizar para el DAG:
* lanzar un comunicado de prensa, enviar cartas a periódicos
* sacarse una foto para el DAG 2010, para incluir en el collage de GAIA
* organizar una aparición en TV/radio para hablar sobre la problemática de la basura o la relación entre la basura y el cambio climático
* hacer una presentación de estrategias de Basura Cero en su comunidad
* organizar actividades con recicladores y otras personas que estén trabajando en el manejo de residuos, para mostrar el potencial de creación de empleos de las estrategias de Basura Cero
* convocar un diálogo con los funcionarios encargados del manejo de residuos en su municipio,
* hablar con los delegados de su país que asistirán a la Conferencia de Cambio Climático en Cancún, México
* realizar una asamblea pública para discutir estrategias ciudadanas por alternativas a la incineración
* organizar un debáte o foro sobre basura y cambio climático
* organizar una acción directa no violenta
* realizar una marcha, manifestación
* preparar acciones creativas como teatro callejero sobre la problemática del consumo y la generación de residuos
* presentar un petitorio al gobierno y las agencias de financiamiento
* lanzar una ciberacción
* organizar una exposición sobre Basura Cero
* dar talleres sobre compostaje y lombricompuesto, prevención de la generación de residuos y Basura Cero
