US Should Stay Out of Cancun Says Climate Action Group

Carbonfund.org calls for the United States to stay home instead of attending the UN climate negotiations, urges rest of the world to make a deal.

Silver Spring, MD, USA – The U.S. should just stay out of the way of meaningful global carbon reduction agreements like those that will be discussed at the upcoming international climate negotiations in Canun, Mexico. At least, that is the viewpoint of nonprofit climate change organization, Carbonfund.org. The organization is hoping that the countries that do participate will extend the Kyoto Protocol, which is set to expire in 2012 and agree on a new emissions reduction strategy.

Participants in next week's U.N. climate conference in Mexico need to agree on financing and technology transfer arrangements to help developing nations reduce their greenhouse gas emissions, China's climate envoy said Tuesday.Xie Zhenhua said a deal would be key to winning the support of developing nations for a binding agreement on carbon emission reductions to succeed the 1997 Kyoto Protocol due to expire in 2012, Xie Zhenhua told reporters in Beijing.

The Kyoto Protocol's Adaptation Fund could take on a wider role to manage money destined to help poor countries deal with the consequences of climate change. Farrukh Iqbal Khan, chair of the Adaptation Fund Board, spoke to EurActiv in an interview.

Khan argued that the small UN Adaptation Fund could in future be affiliated to a new green fund, which world leaders are attempting to agree on at the Cancún climate negotiations kicking off next Monday (29 November).
