Dear IPENers:
Attached is the NGO/CSO Global Common Statement for a Toxics-Free Future. We are asking your organization to please review this Common Statement, and if you can do so, to please endorse it.
(see: www.ipen.org/toxics-free-2012)
The Global Common Statement for a Toxics-Free Future was developed to create greater awareness of the increasing amounts of toxic chemicals in the environment, our food, communities and children, and follow-up on the 2008-2009 Global Outreach Effort to raise awareness about the link between chemical safety and sustainable development (www.ipen.org/campaign/).
The endorsers of this statement have not forgotten the commitments made at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio. Twenty years later, Rio+20 offers little or nothing to ensure these rights.
Today we call on governments worldwide to take action to protect the public and ensure that everyone has the right to safe and secure communities and workplaces, free from toxic threats.
Our aim is to collect over 1,000 NGO/CSO endorsements from more then 80 countries, before the June 11th Global Toxics-Free Future Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (prior to the Rio+20 Prepcom3 and Conference).
As IPENers engaged in the Rio+20 Working Group initiated this statement, it was developed with input from public interest groups from all global regions, and in April 2012 was formally adopted by a group of 10 International Networks and NGOs:
Global Alliance for Incinerator Alternatives (GAIA)
Health Care Without Harm (HCWH)
Friends of the Earth International (FoEI)
International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE)
Northern Alliance for Sustainability (ANPED)
Pesticide Action Network International (PAN)
Women in Europe for a Common Future (WECF)
World Alliance for Citizen Participation (CIVICUS)
Together we agreed to present this Statement for consideration and adoption to NGOs and CSOs in all regions of the world as part of a global campaign to secure more than 1,000 NGO endorsements in at least 80 countries.
On the 11th of June 2012, NGOs will gather at the Toxics-Free Future Forum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The NGO/CSO Global Common Statement for a Toxics-Free Future will be released at the Forum by the organizations that have come together with this important message to the world's leaders. The Forum will serve as the platform for the public release of Statement, highlighting the major sectors and groups that have come together with this common message to the world's leaders.
